Our Modern Foreign Language is Spanish. All Key Stage 2 pupils have weekly lessons in Spanish whilst the younger children have a flavour of the language during lessons.
We have an ‘in house’ specialist language teacher who delivers age-appropriate Spanish lessons once a week jointly with the class teachers. The children develop their ability to communicate in Spanish, through the key skills of speaking and listening, reading and writing. This extends their knowledge of how languages work in general, through exciting, enjoyable and challenging lessons for children of all abilities. We work closely with our partner school, Colegio Publicó Atalia in Spain on several joint projects every year and our pupils regularly write to each other.
We have been awarded the British Council’s prestigious International School Award, (Foundation Level) and more recently Hertfordshire’s Primary Languages Quality Mark. We are currently piloting a project and assisting with research into foreign language learning and assessment in Primary Schools.
At Cherry Tree we aim to develop a lifelong positive attitude towards language learning and encourage enthusiastic learners to see a new perspective on the world. Our Spanish lessons encourage children to understand their own cultures and those of others. The natural links between Spanish lessons and other areas of the curriculum have enriched the overall teaching and learning experiences of all our pupils at Cherry Tree.
